Event Location: Horsham, VIC

New KTM four-stroke powers Marmont and McCoy to 1-2 finish at Horsham

Success in the shape of a great 1-2 finish has come in only the second competitive outing for

Team Motorex KTM and their new 250 SXF weapon after Ryan Marmont and Daniel McCoy

recorded a great 1-2 finish in the final Pro Lite moto at Horsham yesterday.

The pair had a troublesome opening round at Wonthaggi last month but regrouped in order to

ensure that didn’t happen again and this paid dividends at Horsham with great results starting

their progression back up the leader board in the championship standings.

Marmont and McCoy are equal 5th in the Pro Lite Championship and are now less than a race

win behind championship leader Cameron Taylor.

Motorex KTM Team Manager Rob Twyerould was pleased with the effort put in by all

concerned prior to this round, “The riders put everything in to it today and the mechanics have

also worked very hard in the lead up to this round. Those efforts have shown up in the results

with that great 1-2 finish which will spur us on to even greater things in the coming rounds.”

Team Motorex KTM’s sole entrant in the big-bore Pro Open class is Lee Ellis. The Victorian

ran a great race pace at Horsham but poor launches out of the gate and a collision with

another rider cost him dearly in the final results.

Ellis recorded a 5th place in the first Pro Open bout, and a disappointing 14th place in the final

Pro Open encounter following some mishaps during the race meant that he could only take 9th  overall for the round.

Ellis now lies 7th in the Championship standings but is only 1 point adrift of 6th placed Danny

Ham.

Rob Twyerould is confident that Ellis can progress further up the points ladder as the rounds

progress, “Lee is carrying plenty of speed but we will have to work on getting him out of the

gate better and also help him to build more confidence and once we get him on top of those

things I know we will be seeing him on the podium very soon.

“We now have two weeks before the next round of the championship which is up in

Queensland at Toowoomba. We will probably stay in Queensland the following week to prepare for the Coolum round which is the week immediately after Toowoomba.

“We finished up at Horsham on a high note with the 1-2 in the Pro Lites and that is exactly

the form we hope to carry on with as we head to Queensland.”

Horsham again played great hosts to the Australian Championship and the weather brought

some variation in the track. Quite warm conditions greeted competitors in the morning before

a brief shower late in the afternoon cooled things off and made the track quite slippery.

The Maxxis Australian Motocross Championships now heads to Queensland for rounds 3 and 4 of the 8 round series. Round 3 will be held at Toowoomba on April 24 with the Coolum round 4 immediately the weekend after.

Rider Quotes

Ryan Marmont – “I was confident of running a good pace after doing some good times in

qualifying and was eager to get on with the racing.

“I scored the holeshot in the opening moto and kept the lead for a couple of laps before Doz

(Troy Dorron) slipped past, then a little later Cody Cooper pushed me back to 3rd. But Cody

ended up having some dramas which promoted me back up to 2nd. I was holding down 4th

place on the final lap before Cameron Taylor cleaned me up which put me down to 8th place. I

wasn’t too please about that but I knew my pace was good and looked forward to making

amends in the second moto.

“Again I got the holeshot and pretty much just cleared out from there. I wasn’t sure who was

behind me in 2nd place but after coming across the line for the win I looked around to see that

it was McCoy which made the result even better as it gave Team Motorex KTM a clear 1-2

finish.

“We will use the next week or so to test out some settings in preparation for Toowoomba.

That’s the kind of track I am used to so I’m certainly looking to continue on with our success

up there.”

Daniel McCoy – “I only got four laps in during qualifying as we had a few problems and was

forced to sit out most of the session so only ended up about 20th fastest. I had no doubt that

once racing got underway we were going to up the pointy end so I wasn’t too fussed.

“In the first race I was going fairly well until a bolt failure in the rear suspension put me out of

the race. After that disappointment I knew I had to have something go my way in the final

moto and thankfully that was the way it turned out.

“I got a good start and sat in behind Doggie (Ryan Marmont). We pretty much ran away with it from there and pulled out more than 8 seconds on Taylor to bring home a 1-2 finish for the

team.

“Hopefully we can carry that form through to Queensland. First up we head to Toowoomba

which is a track that I haven’t ridden before but from what I’ve seen it looks a little like my

home track at Appin. Then it’s on to Coolum which is one of the sandier tracks we race on.”

Lee Ellis – “I couldn’t really get a good clear lap in qualifying so only ended up 6th fastest.

“I got a fairly average start in the first moto to be down around 13th and got stuck with a pack

of riders for nearly the first half of the race before managing to break through and going on to

work my way up to 5th. That was a fair result but I’m sure it could have been a lot better if I

had got away well.

“I got a much better start in the second moto and was quickly up into 5th place. Just as

everything was looking rosy a big crash caused the race to be stopped and the decision was

made for us to re-run the whole race. Unfortunately the next time I didn’t jump out of the gate

quite so well and was running 8th, well at least I was until I had a mid-air collision with Adam

Cini which put me on the ground. It took me ages to kick the bike back into life and by the

time I got going again I was right at the back of the field. I worked my way up to 14th before

the flag came out but overall it was a disappointing result for me.

“I am however pretty happy with my race pace and hopefully we can have a bit more luck go

our way in Queensland. I will work on my starts this weekend at Broadford when I compete in

a round of the Victorian Titles.”
