Zarczynski Brothers Take Season Opener

Australia’s national number one and two trials riders the Zarczynski brothers kicked off the 2005 trials season just as they completed last season, taking the top two placing at the opening round of the NSW Moto-Trials championships last weekend at South Maroota, west of Sydney.

This time is was Kevin Zarczynski (Fox Motorex Sherco) leading home brother and national champion Colin Zarczynski (Hebo Motorex Sherco), a reversal of the finishing order last time they competed at the 2004 nationals in October. Third place went to Michael Byrne (Gas Gas), who finished fourth in the 2004 rankings.

In dry, rocky and very warm conditions, Kevin completed the first of three laps of the very long 12 section course with the loss of just 4 points, to open a slight advantage over Colin on 6 points, and Mick on 8 lost.

While the temperature increased as the day continued the scores fell with Kevin logging a perfect clean second lap, to edge ahead of his rivals. Both Colin and Byrne were riding very well and only dropping just a few points in the dusty conditions, but it would be enough to see Kevin home safely as time ran out on the final circuit.

The hosting Manly Warringah club had layed out 12 very long, winding, and technical sections for all grades, with over 90 entrants trying to complete four laps (three for experts and A grades) for the first major event of the year. All riders, not just the experts, were having trouble with long queues trying finishing inside the time limit, which cannot be extended once the event has started. Experts were wasting a lot of unnecessary time in the sections by being forced to ride all the simpler A grade cards as well as their own X markers.

On the final circuit, many riders including Kevin and Colin could not get through the queues in time for the 3.30pm finish, missed out on riding the last two sections, and were given maximum 5 points per section. Mick Bryne raced around to finish inside the time limit, but lost more points rushing and remained in third place at the end of the day.

This event was the second Motorcycling Australia 2005 Trial des Nations nominated selection event, and only one additional expert rider, Boyd Willcocks (Sherco-QLD) chose to participate.

In the A grade class, Australian junior champion Kyle Middleton (Gas Gas) continued his rapid rise through the ranks to take a clear win on 38 pts, ahead of the slightly more experienced Mitch Coffey (Sherco) and Jake Walker (Scorpa) who each finished on 50 marks.
