KTM 1-2 at Coolum! – Marmont on top again

Perfect skies greeted competitors at Coolum this morning and that trend continued throughout

the day with the sun shining especially bright on Motorex KTM pair Ryan ‘Doggie’ Marmont

and Daniel ‘DMC’ McCoy.

The dynamic duo took an historic 1-2 for the round at the fourth round of the Maxxis

sponsored 2005 Australian Motocross Championship to continue what is turning out to be a

stellar debut year for KTM’s awesome new 250 SXF four-stroke weapon.

At first glance the Motorex KTM squad thought that McCoy had taken the round victory with

his pair of third place finishes. However after a double-check on the points scoring system

and a final tally up they found that Ryan Marmont’s 5th place in the opening encounter backed

up with his clear victory in the final moto, gave the Wollongong youngster the nod for the round

win by a single point over his Camden based team mate.

Coolum was the third round in a row that the 2004 SX Nationals Champion has taken the top

step on the podium with his victory today adding to the scintillating final moto victories scored

last week at round three (Toowoomba), and earlier last month at round two (Horsham), to give

him a trifecta of final moto victories.

Ryan’s day didn’t start out quite so rosy however as a wrong tyre choice for qualifying saw him

languishing down in 20th position.

Come race one, that choice cost him the chance of a good gate pick and he was left to battle

his way forward through the talented horde of Pro Lite competitors to earn a creditable 5th.

There were no such dramas in the final moto however as Ryan cruised home to a clear victory.

Daniel McCoy was on fire from the outset and put down the 2nd quickest time in qualifying

before backing that good form up with a pair of podium finishes.

Coolum has marked what the Motorex KTM squad sees as a crucial turning point in the

championship.

The mechanics and riders now have a good handle on the exciting new four-stroke 250 SXF

and that is showing in the championship standings as Marmont and McCoy claw back ground

on early series leader Cameron Taylor.

McCoy’s turnaround has been a revelation with the Camden youngster shooting from 8th

outright to 3rd outright with his great swag of points at Coolum.

Unfortunately the awesome Pro Lite success of the team did not carry across to the Pro Open

ranks. Victoria’s Lee Ellis again showed awesome speed on the 450cc KTM but the wrist he

injured at Toowoomba proved too painful once the track rutted up and Motorex KTM Team

Manager Rob Twyerould decided to pull in his Pro Open charge so as to give the troublesome

wrist a rest.

With a three week break until the next round at Newcastle’s Raymond Terrace this should give

Ellis the recovery time he needs in order to come out all guns blazing later this month.

Ryan Marmont – Pro Lites – 1st – “I chose the wrong rubber for qualifying and after only

being 20th quickest I thought well things can only get better from here!

“I concentrated on working my way through the pack in the opening moto and had a fairly good

run and I could just see the leaders in the distance when I ran out of laps so I knew that if I

could get a good start in the second moto then I could certainly challenge for the win.

“I did get that reasonable jump out of the gate in the final moto and was around 7th early in

the race but got into a good flow and worked my way to the front and managed to pull a bit of

a gap and had a good race.

“I don’t get to ride sandy tracks very often so it was quite encouraging to be able to win at

Coolum. The track got very rough during the day so it was really pleasing to be able to run a

race winning pace there.

“Two round wins in a row is a tally I hope to add to at Newcastle later this month. While

Coolum is mainly flat there is plenty of air time at Newcastle and hopefully I can add a first

moto win to my tally of final moto wins.”

Daniel McCoy – Pro Lites – 2nd – “I was the 2nd fastest in qualifying. In the first race I was

running in 2nd place and trying to challenge Burkhart for the lead over the first few laps but

then made a mistake and went down which put me back to around 6th and then I concentrated

on working my way back up and managed to get 3rd place before I ran out of laps.

“I didn’t get a great start in the second moto but got up to 2nd again but an incident on the

penultimate lap saw me slip back to 3rd.”

“We took some good points here and I managed to really progress up the championship

standings which is of course the primary aim at the moment.

“I look forward to our successful trend continuing at Newcastle later this month.”

Rob Twyerould – Motorex KTM Team Manager – “We were really well organised for this

round and everything ran like clockwork for us.

“The week up here in Queensland was fairly good for the boys as we got to ride on some great

tracks during the week while training.

“The priority now is to get Lee fit as he is very sore. Once it got bumpy it was just too hard for

him to hang on with his injured wrist. We have three weeks until Newcastle and hopefully that

time will enable him to regain near full fitness.

“Our Pro Lite riders are closing in on that championship goal bit by bit.

“We still haven’t touched the motors on the new bikes as we have just been concentrating on

fine tuning the suspension to suit the riders and the tracks. We have only been adjusting

springs and the valving inside the forks and shock absorber to suit local conditions but to be

honest the new 250 SXF has the pace to win races right out of the box.”
